Leigh East Under18's Training at Team Leigh Boxing Strength Conditioning & Fitness Gym (19th June)

Leigh East Under18's Rugby League Squad were again at Team Leigh Boxing Strength Conditioning & Fitness Gym on wednesday evening as they continued preparations for the new season with a Boxing & Conditioning session with Team Leigh Boxing coach Adrian Fleming.

International Vest for Jack, Katie Misses out in National Final (13th June)

A busy end to the season saw Team Leigh boxers in action in Scotland, Guernsey and England over the weekend. Jack Catterall represented England in the GB Championships in Motherwell, Scotland on Friday and despite losing on points to the Scottish Champion Charlie Flynn, gained valuable experience in what promises to be a long International career. Katie Smith appeared in her second successive Female National ABA Final in Mansfield on sunday afternoon. After last year's travesty, the Team Leigh light middleweight was looking to finally get her hands on the title, but despite producing the performance of her career was just edged out by Hayley Ciecora of Folkestone ABC. Cameron Pierce travelled to Guernsey as part of a North West Regional Team taking on a Channel Islands Squad. Cameron boxed well, but lost out on points.

Team Leigh's Jack Catterall Selected for England ! (8th June)

Team Leigh lightweight Jack Catterall has been called up to The England squad for the Three Nations Tournament in Motherwell, Scotland this weekend. Jack meets up with the National squad at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield tomorrow morning and will box on saturday afternoon in the British Championships Semi Final

Anna Goes Out Battling in National Semi Final (28th May)

Team Leigh light welterweight Anna Cresswell gave every ounce of effort she had in todays Female ABA National Semi Final against the unbeaten Tammi Bennett of Stafford ABC. Matching her more experienced opponent punch for punch early on, and showing great desire, Anna continually put the Stafford boxer under pressure. It was only in the final round that Bennett caught the tiring Leigh boxer with a number of clean shots to confirm a points win. A fantastic effort by Anna who will only continue to improve.

Jack & Michael Show Their Class in National Finals (22nd May)

The kindest thing that can be said about the National Junior ABA Finals in Kent on saturday afternoon was that the southern boxers were very, very fortunate to be boxing on their own patch. Team Leigh boxers, Jack Catterall and Michael Connor didn't get the National Titles they so obviously deserved and everyone watching, including the current England coach, agreed that (again to be kind) they were very, very unlucky to have to box without a northern judge in attendance. Both boxers showed class inside and outside the ring and it won't be long before both Jack and Michael are rightly, awarded their England vests. It was also a fantastic turnout by a large Team Leigh following who travelled to Kent, and the boxers who were made very welcome by the local Boxing Club Brompton ABC and their Head Coach Billy Beck.

Team Leigh boxers Sparring at Amir Khan's Gym (20th May)

Team Leigh boxers Anna Cresswell, Katie Smith, Michael Connor and Jack Catterall were all at Amir Khan's Gloves Gym in Bolton on tuesday evening for some quality sparring. National Semi Finalist Anna and National Finalist Katie worked well with Yvonne Worthington while Jack and Michael continued preparations for saturday's National Final, Jack moving round with Ellis Waugh and Lee Mitchell while Michael was involved in a top class session with fellow National Finalist Ibrahim Shah.

Pennington FC prepare for the Final at Leigh Boxing & Fitness Gym (19th May)

Pennington FC Under 14's were at Leigh Boxing & Fitness Gym on wednesday evening continuing preparations for their upcoming Final against Oxford. Team Manager Phil Rowbotham brought the lads along for a full boxing session with coaches Adrian Fleming and Corinna Ridge.

Michael & Jack Storm Through to National Finals ! (8th May)

Team Leigh boxers Michael Connor and Jack Catterall today produced top class performances and emphatic points wins in the Junior ABA National Semi-Finals in Barnsley. Michael beat Aaron Lovell of Birmingham's St. Francis ABC 18-10, while Jack outpointed James Beech of Birmingham based Wildstar ABC. Both boxers now box in the National Finals in Essex on May 21st or 22nd.

Lewis Wins Again ! (30th April)

Team Leigh 12 year old boxer Lewis Clark produced another cracking technical display on the Pool Of Life Show in Atherton on Friday evening, outboxing and unanimously outpointing the game James Gibsey of Broughton ABC. The ever improving youngster next boxes on the Leigh ABC Show in Lowton on Saturday June 4th. Also on the Atherton show, light welterweight Phil Hervey suffered a close points defeat to Michael Duffy of Gloves ABC.

Michael Wins by Stoppage in Congleton ! (24th April)

Team Leigh welterweight Michael Connor kept busy in preparation for his upcoming Junior ABA National Semi-Final by taking on last seasons Schoolboy National Finalist Abraham Varey of Macclesfield Boys ABC at Congleton Town Hall on saturday evening. Michael was in no mood for overtime though, and after continually catching his opponent with shuddering jabs and right hands forced a first round eight count, and then finished proceedings after 30 seconds of the second round with a thunderous right hand. Michael next boxes in the National Semi-Final in Yorkshire on sunday 8th May alongside team meates Jack Catterall and Marcus Morrison.

Team Leigh on the march to the National Semi's ! (17th April)

Another fantastic day for Team Leigh on sunday afternoon with three boxers winning in the Junior ABA National Quarter Finals in Manchester. Michael Connor, Jack Catterall and Marcus Morrison all produced stunning performances to advance to the Semi's in Yorkshire

Team Leigh Coach George Gilbody named as England Team Manager (14th April)

Team Leigh coach George Gilbody has been named as the England Schoolboy Team Manager for the 3 Nations Championships in Manchester this weekend. George, holder of a record 11 National ABA Titles, joins the England Squad on thursday morning for the three day championship.

Tomi Wins the NW Region Champion Belt ! (10th April)

Team Leigh boxer Tomi Tatham produced another devastating performance to win the North West Region Light Heavyweight Champion Belt on saturday evening in Morecambe, with a first round stoppage. Facing double National Finalist Jordan Clayton of Northside ABC, Tomi was quickly into action using his jab well and forcing Clayton onto the back foot. The Northside boxer responded with thunderous hooks, but after a wild 2 minutes and 30 seconds Tomi unleashed a massive right hand which dropped Clayton heavily forcing the referee to stop the contest in favour of the well-supported Leigh boxer. Also on the card 12 year old Lewis Clark gave another wholeheated performance despite going down on points to Skerton ABC's George Lowe.

BBC Television at Leigh Boxing & Fitness Gym (30th March)

BBC Television cameras were filming at Leigh Boxing & Fitness Gym on Sunday afternoon as part of the upcoming documentay series "Nearlyweds". The episode features fomer British Super Middleweight Champion Tony Dodson, as he and his friend Sam prepare for their weddings. The BBC requested the possible use of our " Real Boxing Gym" and of course we were only too happy to help. Good luck to Tony and Sam !

Marcus Joins Jack & Michael in National Quarter Finals ! (27th March '11)

Team Leigh boxer Marcus Morrison today joined teammates Jack Catterall and Michael Connor in the National Junior ABA Championship Quarter Finals on 17th April. 17 year old Marcus produced a classy boxing performance to unanimously outpoint the strong Ben Mulligan of Moss Side ABC at Formby Hall, Atherton. Also on todays bill a strangely out of sorts Phil Hervey was retired in the third round of his North West Region Champion Belt challenge against Michael Bolger of Centurions ABC.

Six Great Performances from Team Leigh in Championships ! (21st March '11)

Six Team Leigh boxers were in action in the National Junior ABA Championships at Gorton on saturday afternoon. Class 6 Lightweight Jack Catterall was the first in action and produced a dazzling boxing performance to clearly outpoint last years National Champion Reza Ali of Castle Hill ABC and take the NW Region Title. Following this Class 4 welterweight Michael Connor was again in terriffic form, giving a standing eight count and handing a painful beating to the highly rated Harry Fearn of Larches & Savick ABC, and also being crowned NW Region Champion. Class 5 Cruiserweight Dougie Ward put in a great performance against the far bigger Jonny Twist of Irlam ABC, without doubt scoring the cleaner shots and was unlucky to go down to a majority points defeat. Class 6 light welterweight Jonny Brown outworked and outscored his strong opponent Adam Haigh of Hope Street ABC to book a place in the NW Region Final, while Class 6 Welterweight Marcus Morrison took another unanimous point victory over the brave Jack Cullen of Bolton Elite ABC and a place in the NW Region Final. Finally Class 6 middleweight Tom Jones produced one of the best performances of his career so far despite losing out to a majority points decision to Two Time National Champion John Smith of Sandygate ABC.

Michael & Jack Win Semi-Finals (12 March '11)

Top class performances by Team Leigh boxers Jack Catterall and Michael Connor to win their semi-finals. Michael produced a brutal punching win 21-8 and Jack outboxed his opponent for a dominant 28-4 win. Both box in the Finals next weekend where they are joined on the card by other Team Leigh boxers Jonny Brown, Marcus Morrison, Dougie Ward and Tom Jones.

Dazzling Night at the Leigh ABC Show ! (27th Feb '11)

Great Leigh ABC Show last night, packed house and 18 fights on the card ! Cracking displays by Michael, Tomi, Jack and Marcus. Superb wins too for Matty, Lewis, Adam and Tom. Ashley, Jonny and Katie robbed blind (what were the judges watching ?) while 17 year old David Brown dropped the current Senior National Novice Champion before losing a close points decision.

Matty & Jordan Go Down Fighting in National Semis ! (20th Feb '11)

Team Leigh Boxers Matty Burgess and Jordan Lewis both gave everything they had in The Schoolboy National Semi Finals in Liverpool today but ultimately it wasn't quite enough both losing on points. Both 11 year old Jordan and 13 year old Matty have reached National Semi Finals in their first season and the scary thing is they will only get better !

Team Leigh's 13 year old lightweight Matty Burgess produced yet another amazing display of relentless pressure today in Birmingham, beating the far more experienced James Richardson of Scunthorpe ABC in the Schoolboy ABA National Quarter Final. Twelve year old Sean Connor gave everything he had but went down on points to the unbeaten Elijah Everill of Donnington ABC.

Leigh ABC boxers Jordan Lewis, Sean Connor and Matty Burgess all won NW Region Schoolboy ABA Titles this afternoon, while Adam Ridge went down to a very strange majority points defeat despite handing out a boxing lesson to his fortunate opponent. All four boxers were on top form but special mention must go to Matty Burgess who produced an incredible display of Heart and Will-to-Win which brought him his first title and will no doubt take him a long way in the sport. A non-stop aggressive first title win for Jordan Lewis, and a Second schoolboy title for Sean Connor capped a great day for Team Leigh !

Tomi Misses Out On National Final (9th Jan '11)

Leigh ABC Cruiserweight Tomi Tatham went down on points this afternoon in the Novice National Semi-Final in Scunthorpe. Despite giving every ounce of effort, and struggling with an elbow injury that required a cortisone injection during the week, Tomi could never quite close down his opponent, Stuart Brown of Higherside who boxed well to take the victory

Leigh ABC's Adam Ridge produced a dominant display of boxing in the NW Region Schoolboy Championships Quarter-Final this afternoon in Manchester. Adam took a unanimous points win over Jack Price or Preston club Larches & Savick ABC.

Atherton Dragons Rugby League Club have been breathing Fire while working out at Leigh Boxing & Fitness Gym. In the freezing weather the Under 8's, Under 9's and Under 10's teams have all been working hard on the bags and pads with Boxing Coaches Barry Wolfenden, Corrina Ridge and Tony Parr as they prepare for matches in the New Year.

Michael & Tom Raise a Storm in Morecambe Bay ! (12 Dec '10)

Leigh ABC's Michael Connor and Tom Jones both produced outstanding displays on saturday evening in Morecambe on the Skerton ABC show. Fifteen year old welterweight Michael was voted Boxer of the Night for his performance in defeating the very strong Jack Lowe of Shildon ABC, while Seventeen year old Tom followed this with a dominant display of speed and power to defeat 20 year old Aaron Brown of Shildon ABC. Also on the bill was 11 year old Jordan Lewis who continued his learning curve with a skills bout opposite Jordan Burns of Fleetwood ABC.
The other highlight of the evening was Tom being defeated at pool by a 13 year old using one hand !

Leigh Amateur Boxing Club hosted another successful show at Lowton Civic Hall on saturday evening with fifteen bouts featuring thirteen Leigh boxers. Great performances by Matty Burgess (Simpson Heald & Pearson Junior Boxer of the Night)and Sean Connor were followed with outstanding victories by Jonny Brown (Collins & Darwell Boxer of the Night), Tom Jones, Phil Hervey and Danny Jones (Tommy Sargeant Boxer of the Night). With solid shows from Jordan Lewis, Lewis Clark, Cameron Pierce, Adam Ridge, Ben Grimshaw and Michael Connor, the evening was topped of with a blistering winning performance by Ricky Blydgen who then proposed to his girlfriend Becca in the Ring to the delight of the sell-out crowd !

Andy & Tomi through to National Semi-Finals ! (28 Nov '10)

Leigh ABC boxers Andy Hayes and Tomi Tatham were both today crowned North of England ABA Champions. Heavyweight Andy, giving away both experience and 4 kilos in weight beat Yorkshire Champion Ashley Buckley of Parsons Cross ABC of Sheffield 15-9 in a bruising encounter. Andy was always in control of the bout and despite being pushed all the way outscored and outpunched Buckley to take his third ABA title.
Cruiserweight Tomi Tatham's original opponent, Yorkshire Champion Jamie Kelly pulled out on thursday to be replaced by Thomas Mullvenny, only for him to pull out of the bout also, Tomi also as a result claiming the North of England ABA title and advancing with teammate Andy to the National Semi-Finals in Lincolnshire next saturday afternoon.

Leigh ABC boxers registered two more wins on Friday evening with 11 year old Jordan Lewis winning on points against home boxer Ketan Jackson on the Bredbury & Stockport Show, while 16 year old Super Heavyweight David Brown won in Liverpool, his opponent David Green of Gemini ABC retiring with an injury in the second round.

Leigh ABC's 16 year old Light-Heavyweight produced a cracking boxing performance on the Belle Vale ABC show in Liverpool on Thursday evening to take a unanimous points victory over the home club's more experienced Michael Minard.

Andy & Tomi Win in National Pre-Quarter Finals (21 Nov '10)

Leigh ABC's North West Novice Champions Andy Hayes and Tomi Tatham travelled to Sunderland today to take on the North East Champions, and both emerged with cracking wins. Cruiserweight Tomi, outpunched and outworked Redcar ABC's Opreet Ghag to take a points win, while Heavyweight Andy produced another devastating performance to stop Redcar ABC's William Rice in the second round. Great performances by both boxers who now advance to the National Quarter Finals in Newcastle next Sunday

Phil Top of the Class at School of Excellence ! (18 Nov '10)

Leigh ABC light-welterweight Phil Hervey produced the best boxing performance of his career so far on Wednesday evening. The stylish boxer took a unanimous points win over Collyhurst ABC's John Roberts at the North West Region Centre of Excellence in Gorton, Manchester. Phil next boxes on the Leigh ABC Xmas show at Lowton Civic Hall on saturday December 4th.

Ben loses in Final despite Heroic Performance (13 Nov '10)

Leigh ABC's Ben Grimshaw produced a gutsy, all-action performance in the NW Region Junior Novice Welterweight Final in Manchester this afternoon, but it was never quite enough against a very strong Brendan Hutton of Ancoats ABC, who outscored Ben with the cleaner shots to take a points win. Another learning curve for the Leigh youngster, who will next box on the Leigh ABC show on December 4th.

Leigh ABC's Marcus Morrison NACYP National Champion 2010 (8 Nov '10)

Leigh ABC's Marcus Morrison has been crowned the NACYP National Welterweight Champion for 2010. In a devastating display of speed and power, Marcus beat Repton ABC star boxer Ben Hall 16-9 in Portsmouth on saturday afternoon. The bout could have been over in the first minute as Marcus crashed a massive right, forcing Hall to take a standing eight count, and then continually bombarded the London based boxer who was fortunate to see out the round. To Hall's credit though, he dug deep but was continually struggling to cope with the Leigh boxer's hand spped and accuracy. Heavy right hands in both the second and third round again confirmed Marcus' dominance, leaving the result beyond doubt. A fantastic win for Marcus, Leigh ABC and the town !

Matty Robbed in Wales (31 Oct '10)

Thirteen year old Leigh ABC boxer Matty Burgess travelled to Connah's Quay in North Wales to box on the Shotton ABC show on Friday evening, only to be cheated out of a deserved win. Boxing against the home club's Corey Davies, Matty seemingly to everyone in the room (apart from the Welsh judges) won every round, but went down to a controversial points decision. A great performance by the Leigh youngster, who will only get better and better.

Marcus through to National Final, Stoppage Wins for Andy & Ryan (30 Oct '10)

Leigh ABC's Marcus Morrison Wins on points, through to NACYP National Final while great stoppage wins for Andy Hayes and Ryan Lewis in Novice Championships !
Three great wins for TEAM LEIGH today, with Phil Hervey, Neil Rourke and Martin Davies also doing the town proud despite suffering defeats. Well done everyone !

Jordan's great debut performance (26 Oct '10)

Eleven year old Jordan Lewis became the latest boxer off the Leigh ABC production line on Monday evening, making his Debut on the Sefton ABC show in Liverpool. Taking on the home club's Lewis Finnergan, Jordan boxed really well and despite losing out to a narrow points defeat, the youngster looks to be another promising boxer for the future.

Tatham, Peyton and Sean Connor Star on Leigh ABC Show ! (23 Oct '10)

Another exciting and eventful evening of boxing unfolded at Lowton Civic Hall on Friday as thirteen Leigh ABC boxers lined up against a North of England Select Squad, each one doing the town proud.

Opening the show, and making his debut, was 13 year old Matthew Burgess of St.Mary’s High School, and the youngster delighted the sell-out crowd with an all-action aggressive display to take a deserved points win over Leon Williams of Broughton ABC. Following this Westleigh High School’s 12 year old Sean Connor outboxed and outpunched his strong opponent Thoren Fleischeck of Chorley ABC to chalk up another win, and take the Simpson, Heald & Pearson Junior Boxer of the Night award. Fifteen year old Ben Grimshaw of St.Mary’s High School then continued his winning streak with a powerful punching victory over Jack Cahill of Warrington based Phoenix Fire ABC. Very close points losses were then suffered by 14 year old Adam Ridge of Bedford High school against Ryan Walsh of Northside ABC, and then an out of sorts Michael Connor of Westleigh High School lost by majority decision to Abraham Varey of Macclesfield ABC.

An exciting bout between Leigh’s Katie Smith and Phoenix Fire’s England rep Lydia Morgan saw a points win for the visiting girl. Next up, the experienced Ashley Peyton continued his winning form with a dazzling display of boxing, dropping opponent Steve Backhouse of Broughton ABC in the second round before taking a unanimous points win and the Collins and Darwell Senior Boxer of the Night Award. Reversals for welterweight Ryan Lewis to Lutfi Karadag of Wallasey ABC, and heavyweight Ricky Blydgen to Adam Davies of Irlam ABC, were then followed by a good boxing display and unanimous points win for light welterweight Phil Hervey over Tom Ollerhead of Wallasey ABC.

The returning Rob Bordon, after eighteen months out, put in a great display opposite National Champion Peter Bebbington of Macclesfield ABC, and despite going down on points, looks in great form for the upcoming Championships.

At cruiserweight, there looked a great match up between Leigh’s Tomi Tatham and the highly rated Josh Spence of Macclesfield, but another devastating display of power from the Leigh boxer saw Spence dropped and halted within a minute ! Finally Neil Rourke and Hussain Gulvea of Old Trafford ABC were involved in a whole hearted contest, with Gulvea taking a majority points win.

Tomi & Marcus Win in Hattersley (8 Oct '10)

Leigh ABC boxers Tomi Tatham and Marcus Morrison both produced exciting winning performances on Friday evening on the Mottram & Hattersley ABC show in Manchester. Cruiserweight Tomi, took a unanimous points victory over the giant Steve Hill of the Royal Air Force, while welterweight Marcus won all 3 rounds against the strong Ben Mulligan of Moss Side ABC.

Leigh ABC boxer Cameron Pierce was unlucky in not getting the verdict on saturday evening in Manchester. Appearing on the Middleton ABC show, Cameron was matched with home boxer Charlie Perry, the judges voting in favour of Perry.

Leigh ABC boxers lose out in Boys Club's Finals (2 Oct '10)

The Highs and Lows of Boxing ! The 3 Leigh ABC Boxers in todays NACYP Championship Jonny Brown, Ryan Bayley and Tom Jones all lose out in the Finals. All 3 lads gave everything though in their first bout of the season, and like the Terminator......Will Be Back !

Leigh ABC Boxers Illuminate Blackpool (1 Oct '10)

Leigh ABC boxers Adam Ridge, Andy Hayes and Neil Rourke lit up Blackpool on Friday evening with three stunning wins ! Fourteen year old Adam, in his 25th bout, took a unanimous points win over Skerton ABC's Ben Beswick before cruiserweight Andy Hayes demolished the far more experienced Liam Richards of Blackpool ABC, scoring three knockdowns and forcing a 2nd round stoppage. To cap the night off middleweight Neil Rourke stopped Blackpool's James Tissinter in the 3rd round, Neil's second victory in the week !

Sean Edged Out in Warrington (1 Oct '10)

Leigh ABC's Sean Connor was edged out by majority decision in Warrington to the home club's Jake Carlin on Thursday evening. It was eleven year old Sean's first bout of the season, and the youngster boxed really well and looks a really promising boxer for the future.

Dougie & Neil Steal the Show in Ashton-Under-Lyne ! (25 Sept '10)

Leigh ABC had two boxers making their debuts on saturday evening at Ashton Town Hall, Manchester, and what a first appearance both Dougie Ward and Neil Rourke made !
Sixteen year old light-heavyweight Dougie Ward was matched with Ashton Albion ABC's Josh Mellor, and showing a calmness and maturity beyond his years continually scored with fluid combinations to take a unanimous points win.
Middleweight Neil Rourke and his opponent Oliver Holmes, also from the home club, produced an all-action first round which ended with Holmes recieving a standing eight-count. Leigh ABC's Rourke finished proceedings early in the second round, dropping Holmes to the canvas which saw the referee stop the contest.

World famous Sports Nutritionist Kerry Kayes, owner of CNP Professional Sports Nutrition, was at Leigh Boxing & Fitness Gym on Tuesday evening where he held an enjoyable Sports Nutrition Seminar to a packed audience of Leigh ABC boxers and their families.
Kerry also presented the various Boxer of the Year Awards and the brand new CNP Professional Sports Nutrition sponsored kit was unveiled. The Leigh ABC boxers will proudly wear the kit for the next two seasons, in what is a continuation of support Leigh ABC have recieved from CNP for the past three years.
Senior Boxer of the Year Award went to Super-Heavyweight Michael Grayson, Youth Boxer of the Year was middleweight Tom Jones and the Schoolboy Award went, for the second year running, to light-welterweight Michael Connor. Bout of the Year Award went to lightweight Jonny Brown, Newcomer of the Year was 11 year old Sean Connor, while the Junior Merit Award Winner was Ben Grimshaw.

Phil & Martin kick the season off in Manchester (14 Sept '10)

Light Welterweight Phil Hervey and middleweight Martin Davies both appeared on the Collyhurst & Moston ABC Show in Crumpsall, Manchester on Tuesday evening, both Leigh ABC boxers just going down to majority points defeats.
